Spleen

The spleen is a large, ductless gland-like organ which lies in the left part of the abdomen, just below the diaphragm and toward the rear of the body. The functions of the spleen are known to have significant relationship to the character and circulation of the blood.

One unanswered problem concerns the dissolution and disposal of red cells of the blood which have exhausted their usefulness, and another surrounds the production of new blood cells. Since such cells are ultimately concerned in combating infection, the spleen is further implicated in the control of disease. The spleen contracts, discharging a quantity of blood into the general circulation, when exercising intensively to maintain proper volume of blood circulating in the blood vessels.

Experiments have revealed the contraction and discharge of blood under the influence of exercise. When the exercise is intense enough, the kidneys may become so depleted of blood that they may suffer actual damage. Evidently, the activity of the spleen in maintaining evenness of blood circulation helps to protect other organs which might be adversely affected without this supplementation. It has been found to work as a filter removing particles from the blood; also it acts as a graveyard for red and white cells. It is actively concerned with the formation of red blood cells and the production of leuco-and lymphocytes.

In the immune reaction of the body it closely cooperates with the thymus in the production of lymphocytes. The spleen together with the thymus have been found to back up thyroid function. It is also thought the spleen cooperates with the pancreas and the stomach in producing an internal section which elaborates trypsin. Poor spleen function could lead to digestive disturbances. The spleen contains more iron than the liver an apparently contains another substance not yet classified, which can help keep blood circulating in the arteries.
